According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, cancer is the leading cause of death in dog and cats in the U.S. Each year, 6 million new cancer diagnosis are made in each dog and cat population.

The best way to fight cancer in pets is by early detection.

Lumps and bumps are a common finding in dogs and cats of any age and of either gender. When evaluating any type of mass it is important to look at several criteria to help determine if it is something we should be concerned about. Those benchmarks include:

1.How old is the patient? It is not typical to see aggressive tumors in younger patient. There are a few tumor types that do target younger patients however most of those are not aggressive.

2.What species is the patient? Some tumors are more common in certain species; others are more aggressive. For example, mammary tumors in cats tend to have a much greater frequency of being malignant or cancerous than they do in dogs. Likewise species will affect our prognosis. Certain tumor types respond to therapy better in one species but not as well in others.

3. What breed is the patient? Many tumors have breed predilections. Some carry a worse prognosis in certain breeds. The classic example of this is the mast cell tumor seen in Boxers. Another would be an increased incidence in lipomas in Schnauzers andLabradors. We see more of these in overweight patients.

4.Is the patient spayed or neutered? Hormones can play a significant role in the formation of certain tumors. Tumors are more common in the non-altered patient. This is one of the basic benefits of spaying or neutering your pet. Those tumors most commonly affected by the presence of a reproductive tract include perineal adenomas, mammary gland carcinomas and prostatic tumors. All these are found much less frequently in spayed or neutered patients.

5.Is the lump hard or soft? Fatty nodules or lipomas are one of the more common types of masses we see. These are soft accumulations of fat and typically solitary. They are not usually aggressive. However, many of our more aggressive types of tumors are hard to the touch so a general feel of the tumor helps to determine our course of action.

6.Is the mass ulcerated? Masses that are ulcerated offer a couple of problems. Being ulcerated is typically an indication that the core is necrotic and thus is a constant source of infection. Additionally, most ulcerated masses are rapidly growing where the mass has outgrown the blood supply resulting in the necrosis. Ulceration is one of those key signs that a tumor needs to be removed.

7.Where is the mass located? Certain tumors have an affinity for certain locations on the body and this may help to determine the course of treatment. Remember the feline mammary gland example? When these tumors are found, our first thought should be surgical removal. Splenic as well as tumors in the mouth follow the same criteria.

8.Is the mass solitary or are there many masses or other “bumps”? Aggressive tumors spread through the body using either the blood or lymphatic system. Those utilizing the lymph system frequently present with multiple swollen lymph nodes. This is a key factor in determining our course of treatment as well as prognosis.

9.Is the mass bothersome? While many tumors may not be cancerous, they may require attention if they are causing an annoyance to the owner or patient. For example, tumors on the ear may increase head shaking while tumors in the ear canal may lead to greater frequency of infections. Tumors on the feet and legs may result in gait abnormalities leading to increased incidences of arthritis and other joint problems. So while a tumor might not be malignant or cancerous, many times it does require attention.

There is only one true method to determine what type of tumor our pets have. That requires getting a sample of the cells that compose the tumor and having them classified microscopically by a pathologist. This can be done by pulling off some cells or by removing the tumor.

Stella has a new sidekick! Not too fond of her yet but getting better everyday. I think Stella now realizes Sophie is really going to be fun. They have started playing and Stella is showing Sophie the ropes.

We still have a bit of crying while in her "space" but that seems to be reducing as well. Ahhhh, we're on our way to normalcy again!

Bend Oregon

Just back from our road trip to Bend Oregon to visit Grandpa & Tutu. We all drove up in the Flex which accommodated all 7 of us perfectly. I had my bed in between Mom and Karly for the long 8 hour drive.

Once we arrived we settled in to Grandpa and Tutu's beautiful Dog-Friendly vacation rental. (Bend, Oregon: in the Heart of Downtown and Old Mill District Bend, Oregon Vacation Rental by Owner Listing 302440) . Everyone opened a beer, I had a nice bowl of water and Karly & Wyatt had their snacks. We had pizza at Jackson's Corner and then crashed for the night.

We hiked the River Walk and Trail and checked out the Old Mill District. And on Father's Day we spent the day at Aunt Kay's house. I ran and ran with my cousin's Missy and Jesse.

A warm inviting mountain getaway with a cosmopolitan appeal is what you'll find when you arrive in the friendly town of Bend, Oregon dubbed the playground of the West"! This is my second visit to Bend and I sure do like it there!

The 2011 K9 Cancer Walk in Elk Grove

Myself, my family, and my Boxer friends and their owners walked again in the 3rd Annual K9 Cancer Walk on Saturday in Elk Grove! It was a beautiful day with LOTS of four legged companions supporting the cause.

This year everyone helped raise over $60,000 to Fight Canine Cancer!!! All moneys collected go directly to Morris Animal Foundation's Canine Cancer Campaign to fund research toward a cure!

More than 29 teams participated in the Top Dogs Contest. Top Dogs Contest winners are:

It's been a while since I've have posted on Travels With Stella. My family and I haven't really been on any long adventures lately. But, there are new adventures at home! My family is busy packing up our house. We are moving to a new house with a great yard for me to do my favorite thing...sunbath! There is also a new human in our family. Karly was born last July. She is 9 months now and loves to talk to me....I have no idea what she is saying, but have a feeling we will be life-long buddies!

I just had a birthday. I am 7 years old now. My family had a birthday celebration in my honor with Auntie Brittany, Uncle Steve, and Wyatt. I dined on Nature's Variety with green beans while everyone else got pizza and Stella Artois beer.

Today we were told that Pilot, Stella's beautiful Dad, had passed away. We are so sad at the loss of this wonderful boy. Pilot you will be missed. Rest in Peace!

My best friend closed his eyes last
night, As his head was in my hand.
The Doctors said he was not in pain,
But no longer could he stand.

The thoughts that scurried through
my head, As I cradled him in my arms.
Were of his younger, puppy years,
And OH...his many charms.

Today, there was no gentle nudge

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven lies the Rainbow Bridge
When a beloved pet dies, it goes to the Rainbow Bridge .
It makes friends with other animals and frolics over rolling hills
and peaceful, lush meadows of green.

Our pets do not thirst or hunger. The old and sick are made young once more; the maimed and the ill become healed and strong.
They are as healthy and playful as we remember them in days gone by.
Though happy and content, they still miss someone very special,
someone they had to leave behind.

Stella Visits Mill Valley California

What a beautiful trip! Mill Valley has it all! Beautiful surroundings, great food, lots to do, and wonderful people.

We stayed at Joie de Vivre's Acqua Hotel in Mill Valley. A blissful location at the edge of the San Francisco Bay with a bountiful complimentary continental breakfast buffet with espresso bar. Our Junior suite featured a panoramic view of Mt. Tamalpais and Richardson Bay, a nice patio, and a doorway to the great walking path which we enjoyed every morning!

A pet friendly hotel, Acqua offers the "Something to Bark About" package. Stella got special pampering when we checked in - a nice bowl for her water, and two bags of yummy doggie treats! Stella could hang with us in the lobby while we sipped wine and nibbled on cheese & crackers during Acqua's daily wine hour.

We shopped at the Village in Corte Madera where every store welcomed Stella through their doors and even had tasty treats for her and water bowls full of cool water for her to drink.

As for dining...we didn't make it to my favorite, The Buckeye, but found plenty of other locations that are pet friendly with wonderful outdoor seating. We did stop at another favorite spot on our way home to Sacramento...The Marin Brewing Company. Great brews and lots of doggies on the patio! :-)

Independent pilots and rescuers join forces to save death-row dogs

Pepper and Booberry had a lot in common. Pepper looked like a Shih Tzu but nobody was certain. The abused and abandoned dog was found urine-soaked, flea-ridden, and battling a raging urinary tract infection. Tumours on her back made it look bent. Booberry, a blue Chihuahua who was more ear than body, was found in a dumpster suffering from parvovirus. Both were resident at a shelter that euthanized far too many dogs every day. Both were hopeless and both were close to their last days on earth. But they shared one more similarity. Both dogs were plucked from the shelter in Fresno, California, to be part of the Freedom Flight program, the brainchild of founder and orangedog.ca owner Jan Folk.

Freedom Flight is exactly that—a volunteer-run flight program that flies dogs from shelters in California to the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) in Alberta, where ample forever homes are waiting. “I just can’t go past a dog without stopping,” says Folk. “Every time I see a dog, I smile and start to laugh.”

After semi-retiring, Folk started orangedog. ca, which sells high-end products with all the profit going to canine charities. She already sat on the board of EHS and had approached them about selling her products there. They knew Folk, of course, and also knew she travelled to California extensively and had access to a Gulfstream III jet. EHS also had an agreement with a Fresno shelter that if it could get its small-breed shelter dogs to Edmonton, the society could find homes for them. So the Edmonton people told Folk that if she really wanted to help, maybe she could fly these dogs to Alberta. The idea took off, literally. “The amount of animals euthanized [in the USA] in 2010 will be about 500,000,” says Folk. “In Fresno, they euthanize 114 a day.” So Folk fired up the jet and made her first trip in June, 2009,on her birthday. She brought in 54 dogs from Fresno; then another 85 on Thanksgiving, followed by 114 on Valentine’s Day. “On Valentine’s Day, people [in Edmonton] were standing outside the door waiting for these dogs,” says Folk, who made a fourth trip on June 25, 2010, bringing another 60 dogs, again in celebration of her birthday.

Folk says she got involved because dogs can’t help themselves. “For years, I wrote a cheque,” she says. Giving money just wasn’t enough, however. “People are always saying someone should do something about this. Now I’m still financing it but I got off my ass and made it happen.” It’s worth her investment when she sees a dog come off the plane and she knows it’s going to a good home. “I swear to God, when they go somewhere safe, they know it. They never make a sound on the plane.” Folk is amazed by the sweet and forgiving nature of the dogs she handles. She has seen badly abused dogs that still lick her face when she meets them.

Folk isn’t the only one with a plane and a love of dogs who is making a difference. Sam Taylor lives in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a pilot in the navy before teaching high school until retirement. Though he hadn’t flown since 1982, he rediscovered his love of flying and joined what he describes as the largest aero club in the free world. “I was driving in Tennessee and saw an airport. I parked and walked around; I like to do that as a hobby. I saw a little airplane with a ‘for sale’ sign and thought it was meant to be,” he says. That little plane was his until a hailstorm damaged it. With his insurance settlement, he purchased a four-seat Cherokee 180.

In March, 2009, he heard about Pilots N Paws, a charitable organization based around a web-based forum board that creates a place for pilots to connect with rescue groups across the United States. Pilots move dogs from shelters where euthanasia is imminent to areas where demand for adoptable animals is high.
“I looked at the website and thought it would be kind of fun,” Taylor says. “I looked at the posts and saw three dogs here in Kansas City that needed to go to Columbus, Ohio, and one in Ohio going to Arizona through Kansas City.”
He was hooked. “I love to fly,” he says. “Secondly, it’s a lot of fun; I like all the scheduling and networking and coordinating. I enjoy doing that. And I like rescuing dogs. It sure does make a lot of people really happy, too. When I finally get the dog to them, they really appreciate it.” One dog in particular caught his attention. Taylor was in Pryor, Oklahoma, picking up a Labradoodle.
“It was at risk of euthanasia at a city-run shelter and the woman there really liked the dog and didn’t want it put down. A rescue group found a home in Olathe, Kansas. I volunteered to get it and fly it to Olathe.” Everything was set but once the dog was in the plane and Taylor made his confirmation call to the new owner, he learned she was no longer able to take the dog. Unwilling to put it back in the shelter where it would be killed, Taylor flew it home to await developments.
“Well, the dog had a funny way of walking and its hind leg stuck out when it sat down. I didn’t really know what to do.” So he called his own vet and took it in the next day for a check-up. “Its right leg had a broken femur and was trying to heal but not properly. It never set. Its left leg was knocked out of its socket. The vet said, ‘by the way it’s been shot with birdshot’—22 pellets were seen on the x-ray. We had had the dog 24 hours and my wife was hooked.” The dog joined Taylor’s family and now sports the name Pryor.

Debi Boies is the co-founder of Pilots N Paws. She had been involved in rescue, mostly Dobermans, and had found a Dobie in Florida that she wanted to bring home to South Carolina. She contacted other members of her Prevost Owners Group to see if anyone travelling by bus would let the dog hitch a ride.
“Jon Wehrenberg, a friend from the Prevost Owners Group, said ‘why don’t I fly down and get him and get him to you?’ I was just astounded,” she says.
He told her that pilots love to fly and are always looking for a reason to do so, and he wondered if there might be a need for such a volunteer service. Between the two of them, they founded Pilots N Paws.
It’s become a full-time pursuit for Boies. Since February, 2008, Pilots N Paws has transported thousands of dogs. The site has 1,726 pilots registered in every state except one. Pilots volunteer their time and pay their own fuel, although there is a tax break for a portion of their costs.
“The rescues are primarily dogs slated for euthanasia,” says Boies. “Some are pulled in just hours before euthanasia; some are pulled from the euthanasia room. They’re taken from shelters and sent to rescue groups in another part of the country where there’s better spay and neuter programs and where there are more adoptive homes.”
With thousands of rescued dogs, there are thousands of wonderful stories but one stands out above all others.
One of her pilots was driving his vehicle in northern Tennessee just before Christmas. It was nighttime, it was dark, freezing cold, and snowing. The fellow saw a blanket at the side of the road and swore it was moving. He doubled back, got out of his vehicle, and lifted the blanket.
“It was a red Doberman with a severe case of mange. It couldn’t walk. The pads of its feet had sloughed off. Obviously someone had dumped it there, on the road to the shelter. Who knows what people think?” she says. The pilot picked up the dog and brought it home. The dog was flown to a Doberman rescue group in Pennsylvania, re-named Christmas through a fundraising Name Game, and soon found a forever home.
Pilots N Paws is Boies’ passion. A retired nurse, she says she spends every day of her life working with the program, but it’s a labour of love.
“The pilots will tell you the rescuers are their heroes. The rescuers will say the pilots are their heroes,” says Boies about the more than 7,000 users who are all polite and do their best to work for a common cause. “They make the choice to volunteer and help. It’s truly the best of humanity working together.”

Pet-A-Palooza

Yesterday's High 70's to low 80's made it the perfect day for a concert in the park! Better yet...Pet-A-Palooza at Rusch Park! Presented by 100.5 The Zone (CBS Radio)Pet-a-Palooza celebrated everyone's love of pets with a day in the park where attendees brought their dogs & enjoyed live music by Alex Band and the Bare Naked Ladies. There were plenty of food vendors, shopping, and animal exhibitors & exhibitions to keep everyone happy...one could even adopt a new pet!

With performances from the Citrus Heights K9 unit, the Splash Dogs, Spinning Frisbee K9s, and an obstacle course set up for dogs to show their talents there was plenty to keep everyone busy all day! Metro PCS even offered attendees opportunities to have their photo taken with their pet!

Over 30 non-profit organizations were on-site - including Nor Cal Boxer Rescue and the K9K Cancer Walk group - adopting dogs, cats, rabbits, and more at the first ever Pet-a-Palooza.

Pets stayed hydrated all day thanks to Western Feed & Pet Supply! Hydration Stations were placed though out the venue, keeping dogs cool and happy!

We were happy to catch up with with the radio crowd in the VIP area, sip a cool brew and listen to fun music!

"Just A Dog"

A friend sent this to me and I thought it deserved to be posted!

From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog," or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog." Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand phases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise." "Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. "Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of "just a dog" I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. "Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog" but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man." So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog." just smile, because they "just don't understand."

A variety of dog breeds will give demonstrations plus you can bring home a special dog from the adoption/rescue row. Shopping is a must in the Dogs Pavilion with hundreds of booths selling everything needed for your dog; from dog food to crystal collars and everything in between. Last year’s event was organized and funded by the Sacramento Canine Cancer Campaign Volunteers and raised over $19,000 towards canine cancer research. This year, Morris Animal Foundation is organizing the Walk, with support from the Sacramento Canine Cancer Campaign Volunteers and sponsors. The goal for the 2010 K9 Cancer Walk is $30,000. All proceeds will benefit Morris Animal Foundation’s Canine Cancer Campaign.

Natural foods and locally grown organic produce. They make their own bread and pastries and serve espresso, salads and hot entrees, cakes and natural and organic deli and juice items. There are some street side tables for outdoor dining and watching the world go by.

Roederer Estate:Nestled into Mendocino's rolling hills and surrounded by vineyards, Roederer Estate is barely visible from the roadway. The rustic exterior may not be what one expects from the venerable House that created Cristal. Although the company could easily have built an elaborate showplace, Roederer's natural beauty and the relaxed charm of the Anderson Valley. Zina Hyde Cunningham Winery: Some of the specialties of this scenic winery include a Bordeaux Cepage blend, Carignane, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah. Dogs are allowed around the property, but not in the tasting room. That's OK. We love sitting outside and enjoying a nice glass of wine!

Yes, they do have ticks in the rainy season and the summer golden hills bring foxtails. They mow extensive areas around the cottages to minimize foxtails.

Tips on Dog-Safe Gardening

Garden organically, for the sake of both the planet and your dogs. Raised beds protect plantings from scampering paws and swinging tails. Dogs can be taught where they’re permitted and where they are not.

Digging pit, preferably in shaded locations, give dogs places to practice their excavation skills without disrupting your garden beds. You might entice them to use it by lightly burying (as they watch you) a treat-filled Kong.

Leave a plant-free “patrolling” area around the perimeter of your yard; dogs instinctively (and repeatedly) cruise boundaries and fence lines.

Construct a barrier around plants of the nightshade family, including eggplant, tomato and potato; their foliage and stems contain dangerous alkaloids that can kill a dog. Foxglove, Deadly Nightshade, Larkspur have toxic effects on the heart and circulation. When dogs eat large amounts of onions, they may suffer red blood cell destruction. Rhubarb leaves contain oxalic acid. In quantity, it damages kidneys.

Avoid cocoa bean mulches; their chocolaty smell makes them pup catnip, but they contain theobromine, which is toxic for dogs.

Cross almond or walnut trees off your list for areas used by dogs; tannin is a canine toxin, and almond and walnut hulls contain it; moldy walnuts are also a problem. Avoid trees with toxic bark, such as cherry (contains cyanide-like components). And, some stone fruit trees (apricots, plums) can provide raw material for obstruction by indigestible pits.

Do not use snail bait containing metaldehyde, which is highly poisonous to dogs and cats. Copper barrier tape is a good alternative; slugs and snails are deterred from crossing it by the tape’s tiny positive electric charge.

Protect young trees, especially if you have a male dog. Be sure to frequently rinse the trunk and soil with fresh water. Or, secure a copper or galvanized splash guard of appropriate height and circumference around the developing tree the first couple of years to divert unwelcome attention from your pup.

Dog Friendly in Hayes Valley San Francisco

This last weekend Travels With Stella took us to Hayes Valley in San Francisco. Being a neighborhood we had never explored before we were excited to get out and see the sights! Staying at Laguna & Hayes we were SMACK in the middle of everything! Where the crack houses and tenements once stood, now there are trendy fashion boutiques, SoHo-style funky art galleries, high-end interior-decorating shops, top-notch restaurants and funky-hip nightspots.

Some of our favorites:
Paolo: For those in search of classic Italian leather shoes, Paolo features many one-of-a-kind styles for men and women. A pair of shoes were calling my name from the window and we had to go in! However, be warned, these high-end shoes don't come cheap, ranging in price from $150 to $700 a pair. Cisco Home - Sustainable Living: The furniture is made with natural materials, friendly to the environment and customized to your taste and exact needs. Back to the flat for wine & cheese and a few rooftop photos, then off to
Suppenkuche for dinner. Winning accolades for its international scene, Suppenkuche serves traditional, hearty comfort food such as traditional German wiener schnitzel, pork chops and sausages. Though the stark white walls and basic pine-wood tables aren't all that warming, the upbeat clientele and zesty German beers such as Bitburger, Erdinger Dunkel, Weltenburger and Franziskaner more than make up for it. Exploring the traditions behind the Suppenküche, and the sensations of German food and beer from different regions of Germany, with an emphasis on Bavarian cooking is a must! Suppenküche is not an ordinary restaurant it is more like a traditional German Wirtshaus. 525 Laguna St.

For breakfast Sunday morning we enjoyed the sunshine outside at Stack's. While we chowed down on the best darn pancakes we've ever had, Stella got to lay at our feet in the sunshine and dog watch! I think Stack's even topped my favorite- First Awakenings in Monterey!

Also not to be missed is Citizen Cake. Upon entering you see the tantalizing baked-goods case, but Citizen Cake also serves main meals, sandwiches with house-made breads, wine and beer. 399 Grove St.

Is Your Dog Bowl Safe?

With the overwhelming selection of food, toys, and furniture on the market today for your pets, it’s nice to keep it simple with the basics... — a dog bowl, after all, is just a dog bowl. Or is it? Actually, the choices of food bowls that are available are staggering, ranging from ceramic to silicone to even disposable bowls made of paper or sugar cane.

So how can you know which bowl is right for your pooch? The Raise a Green Dog! blog put a multitude of options to the test, and discovered that some choices are a lot safer than others. One of the poorest choices turned out to be the plastic bowl–for many reasons:
One reason is that plastics scratch and those little crevices can harbor unhealthy bacteria, that even a good safe cleaning can’t deter. In addition, there are many reports in the news that plastics can emit chemicals like Bisphenal A, or BPA. Every few years, articles regarding the safety of plastics hit the news headlines – most recently in the form of reports of a chemical found in baby and sports bottles: Bisphenal A, or BPA.

What is BPA? The EWG says, “bisphenol a (BPA), a synthetic estrogen used to harden polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resin, is the focus of a growing number of research studies and legislative actions, reflecting mounting scientific evidence that it causes serious and sometimes irreversible damage to health, even at the low doses to which people are routinely exposed.” Prolonged trace BPA exposure is thought to cause a variety of problems ranging from chromosomal disorders to chemotherapy-resistant cancers. Not something you want yourself ingesting, let alone your best buddy!

So, in contrast, which dog bowl came out ahead of the pack? Another classic: the stainless steel bowl. Highly recommended! It is believed to be the absolute safest dog food and water dispensing bowl. It’s what Stella uses for all her meals and water, whether at home or on the road. Durable, sanitary, and rust-free — when it comes to pet bowls, the simplest option is also the safest and best you can give for your pets.

K9K Walk To Cure Canine Cancer

Last year Stella, myself, and The Sacramento Valley Boxer Club joined together to walk in the 2009 K9K Walk to Cure Canine Cancer.

Cancer is the number one cause of death in dogs. According to the National Cancer Institute more than six million dogs will be diagnosed with cancer each year in the U.S. 45% of dogs 10 years old or older die of cancer. Lymphoma is one of the most common cancers in dogs. It occurs most commonly between 5 and 12 years of age. Boxers, Basset Hounds, Cocker Spaniels, Fox Terriers, German Shepherds, Scottish Terriers, Rottweilers and Golden Retrievers are at an increased risk when compared with other breeds.

Reasons for Hope:
Early detection of canine cancer is critical. There is an early detection blood test now available for lymphoma. Canine cancer researchers are working hard to develop more early detection blood tests for common cancers that can be added to your dog's annual health exam.

Hosted by the Sacramento Morris Animal Foundation's Canine Cancer Campaign Volunteers, this event will continue to grow in strength and numbers.

Join Morris Animal Foundation (MAF) on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Elk Grove Regional Park to celebrate your best friend or to honor the memory of your best friend at the 2nd Annual K9 Cancer Walk benefiting MAF’s Canine Cancer Campaign. This is one of a series of walks in 2010 that MAF will host around the nation to help dogs enjoy longer, healthier, cancer-free lives.

Pick Up After Your Dog!

Are you a good neighbor dog owner? Do you help to prevent environmental contamination by picking up and properly disposing of your dog's poop? Here are some good reasons to "Pick-Up After Your Dog:

Removing dog feces prevents reinfestation of your dog from exposure to infective worm eggs and larvae, and dog feces can transmit diseases from your dog to people. Roundworm, hookworm and other parasitic worms may be transmitted to young children and adults who play or work in their yard/dirt when dog feces is present. Ocular larva migrans - an eye disease caused by parasitic worms found in dog droppings can cause serious eye damage to young children. Clean it up, please!

Animal waste can be a contributor to storm water pollution. It contains disease-carrying bacteria and toxins that can increase the risk of viral infections, flu, and skin rashes for ocean swimmers near storm drain outlets. More than 10 million gallons of water containing fecal contaminants from human and animal sources, flows into neighborhood storm drains every day - even more when it rains. My neighborhood allows garden refuge in the street for weekly pick up. Many neighbors toss their poop bags in these piles. Don't! I'm sure the neighbors that live there don't want to look at your garbage in their garden pile! Take it with you!

Dog feces and urine can result in lawn burn or dead patches. When it's your dog on your neighbor's lawn, it causes a great deal of hostility--toward you, and your dog. Eliminate it!

After a day of baking in the sun, the odor from dog feces can become offensive. Scoop it!

It can ruin a good pair of shoes. Grab it!

Parks belong to everyone, not just your dogs. Kids play on the grass, and families enjoy picnicking, dog feces takes the joy out of outdoors activities. Bag it! Dog feces are not part of nature on a hiking trail, its part of your responsibility as a dog owner to pack it out. Don't leave it behind!

Don't give municipal governments an excuse to ban dogs from public areas or even think about controlling our great American passion of dog ownership. CLEAN IT UP! You make your kids clean up their rooms--clean up your dog's poop!

Have Fun, But Know Your Dog Park Etiquette

Off-leash dog parks are a wonderful recreational outlet for dogs all over the world. The opportunity to run and play with other dogs in a securely fenced environment is a valuable tool in their social development. Unfortunately, not every dog park is filled with responsible owners, and as in most things, a few unmannerly people can ruin the whole experience for most. Make sure you're not one of those humans by following these basic etiquette tips for bark parks.

Don't bring your unvaccinated dog or puppy in a park full of other dogs. It's just asking for the rapid spread of disease, some that could be fatal, especially to young puppies. Most parks will prohibit the entry of puppies younger than four months as well, the common age when the full range of puppy vaccines have been given.

Bring a Healthy Dog:
Don't bring your sick dog to a dog park! It's just common sense but it's amazing how many people will bring a dog who's currently suffering from kennel cough, or has fleas, or mange, or other health problems.
Clean Up After Your Dog:
To further prevent the unintentional spreading of disease and intestinal parasites, pick up after your dog. Leaving piles for other dog owners to clean up is unforgivably rude and could result in you being fined, and you and your dog being banned from the park.
Human Children at Off-Leash Dog Parks:
There are many good reasons to keep children out of off-leash dog parks, and no good reasons to bring them in. The possibilities for accidents are staggering. Be a responsible parent, and keep your small children in the parks designed for them.
Female Dogs in Heat:
Taking a female dog in heat out in public is unbelievably irresponsible, especially out somewhere where there are dozens of dogs running loose, with many possibly unneutered males.
Don't Bring Too Many Dogs:
Many parks will have a posted limit on the amount of dogs one person can bring into a dog park. It's really best not to bring more than dog than you can handle, even if that number is less than allowable limit.
Don't Bring Other Animals That Are Not Dogs:
For the safety of all concerned, dogs, the other animal, and the people in the park, do not bring animals other than dogs to a dog park.
Be Responsible For Your Dog's Behaviour:
If your dog digs a hole, be responsible, and fill it back in. If he can not play nicely with other dogs on that day, then take him home.

Following each park's individually posted rules and regulations will help keep dog parks open and available to all dogs. Failure to obey the rules can result in your local park being shut down, or worse, cause a serious accident that could have been prevented.

Sunshine and a Pretty Pink Tutu

Our neighbors Ken & Thom brought out their Great Dane Lottie's tutu for Stella to try on. She wasn't too sure of what this pink fluffy thing was doing on her...but as usual, she was a trouper and oh so pretty!

A Beautiful Day For Wine Tasting in Carmel Valley!

It was a beautiful sunny day in Carmel Valley on Saturday as we joined our friends Angel, Laura, and Lola for a bit of wine tasting.

We began at Boëté Winery. The Saunders Vineyard is nestled on the eastern edge of Carmel Valley, a boutique winery producing tasty Estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Next, we hit the cluster close to the Village - Heller Estate Organic Vineyards, Talbott Vineyards, and Georis Winery. We truly enjoyed the warm sunny porch at Heller as we sipped some nice Merlots and Pinot Noirs.

The patio at Talbott Winery is always an inviting place to sit and sip stellar wines. Stella and Lola were happy to sit and enjoy the sunshine in the enclosed gates and people watch. The four of us and the two beautiful brindal boxer girls had lunch next door in the Corkscrew Cafe garden as we sipped Georis's five flight Merlots and Cabs.

With time enough for one more tasting stop, we walked over to Joyce Vineyards located in the Lyonshead Art Gallery in Carmel Valley Village. At the Joyce tasting room they offer an estate tasting of a cabernet, merlot and pinot noir; a non-estate tasting that allows you to chose five non-estate wines including chardonnay, syrah, cabernet, merlot and three varietals of pinot noir; and a combination of two estate and five non-estate wines.

Great day! Over too fast! Carmel Valley always leave you wanting more!

How to Keep Your Dog Happy During the Holidays - By 3bigdogs

1. Dogs thrive on routine and there is nothing as disruptive as the holiday season. Your dog may exhibit some unacceptable behavior in order to get your attention. Take a moment to try to understand what your dog may be thinking. If you suddenly are too busy to take him for a walk, he just isn't going to understand why. Try to keep some things as routine as you can. He'll settle back down once things get back to normal.

2. Practice a leave it command before you bring your Christmas tree home. It will be much easier if he already knows what it means. Keep him away from tinsel, ornaments, and electrical lights. They are extremely attractive to your dog, and extremely hazardous. Don't decorate your tree until he has had time to check it out with a good sniff or two.

3. Don't allow your dog to drink the tree water. There could be pesticides or pine tar in the water. Secure your tree. Speaking from experience I will repeat this...secure your tree. Once a feisty pup gets a hold of an ornament or tinsel, and tries to run off with it, that tree will come toppling over. and your dog may get hurt.

4. Keep poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe where your dog can't reach it. It is poisonous to them. It can cause a lot of gastrointestinal problems.

5. Make sure your dog gets enough sleep. This is especially true of puppies. An overtired dog is just like an overtired toddler. Make a comfy spot for them to retreat to in another room.

6. Remember to stock up on dog food. It's so easy to accidentally run out of food with so many other things to think about. This way you won't have to run out on Christmas Eve or resort to feeding them food that is not good for them.

7. If you plan on getting your dog groomed, make the appointment now. Right before Christmas, most groomers are extremely busy and may not have time if you wait until the last minute.

8. If you live in a snowy area, wipe your dogs paws before bringing them in the house. Road salt is very irritating, and can cause problems if ingested. Even if your dog doesn't leave your yard, they may have gotten some from the driveway where your car is parked.

9. Please think twice about bringing a puppy home for Christmas. It's a very stressful time for all, and a new puppy that is overwhelmed may nip. House training isn't likely to get off to a good start with all the distractions and there are too many health hazards around for a new puppy.

10. Enjoy the holidays with your dog. Take lots of pictures. But remember your dog doesn't understand what the holidays mean. He just knows there's excitement in the air, and will get very excited too. Keep him on a good feeding schedule, give him some quiet time, and exercise him a lot. Then you will have one less thing to worry about...and we can always use one less thing!

New Canine Partners Program Welcomes Mixed-Breed Dogs into the World of
AKC.

New York, NY - For the past 125 years, the American Kennel Club® has been the only organized group of dog lovers providing millions of purebred dogs and their owners with engaging, lasting and just plain fun ways to celebrate the canine-human bond. AKC programs span the entire spectrum-from highly competitive events to basic training, from funding research that advances canine health to returning lost dogs home safely- the overall well-being of dogs is the theme that runs consistently throughout all our efforts.

Purebred enthusiasts, by sharing their love of dogs with each other, have sprouted thousands of dog clubs throughout the country. These club members, a dedicated group of volunteers who rally around common goals promoting responsible breeding and dog ownership are the rich soil that all AKC programs grow and thrive from.

Now, we are pleased to be able to extend many of the benefits of AKC affiliation to a whole new audience-mixed breed owners. These millions of dog lovers will now be able to do more with their pets by enjoying the excitement of canine competition and accessing a myriad of other AKC resources and services.

We booked our annual "After Thanksgiving Getaway"...Carmel Valley here we come! We always stay at Los Laureles Lodge, a locals favorite and very Dog Friendly! Rich in legend and history, the Lodge and Restaurant reflect the colorful influence of Spanish conquistadors, tribal Indians, and a flavorful mixture of bandits, cowboys and socialites.

Los Laureles Lodge is Carmel Valley's original hotel and hunting lodge. The Pacific Improvement Company acquired the lodge in 1915. During the ownership of the Pacific Improvement Company many visiting dignitaries from other countries, as well as our country, where the guests of the Del Monte Hotel were transported by tallyho coaches when there was little or no sun along the coast. There is lots of space for me to walk and run and I like getting cozy by the fire pit in the evening!

I'm especially looking forward to our wine tasting adventure. I'm always invited in to the tasting rooms. I love the crackers! Some of our favorites - Talbott, which produces stellar chards and pinot noirs, all with varying degrees of oakiness. The pinot is generally Burgundian in style—earthier, less fruit-forward than New World pinots. I know what your thinking....For a dog, I sure know a lot about wine!

One of the funnest spots is Georis Winery, where people taste on a hidden garden patio with fountains gurgling beneath flowering trees. Unlike at other tasting rooms, I can wander about and lay in the sun here, allowing my people time to properly evaluate the complex, all-estate-grown merlot blends.

The trip won't be complete without a stroll through Carmel-By-The-Sea. Everyone has water bowls out for me. Even Tiffany has a pretty Tiffany Blue Bowl by their door! I enjoy dinner at Casanova, and sunset cocktails at Spanish Bay.

Stay tuned as I visit Carmel the end of November. It'll be Dog Gone Fun!

Home Again, Home Again... a tired pooch dreaming of her "Travels with Stella" Pacific Northwest Road trip.

The end of our trip...Beautiful Bend Oregon

We set off for Bend Oregon on Friday September 11th for a weekend stay with Dad & Dawn. Before we left we had to tour the Whitman College Campus and find Sigma Chi, where our friend Kevin once called home.

The ride to Bend was uneventful, but once there...ahhh, relaxing! After unpacking we settled in the back patio with a bottle of wine and conversation with Dad & Dawn.

That evening we dined at Zydeco Kitchen & Cocktails, a from-scratch kitchen focused on freshness & quality ingredients. When possible their foods are organic & hormone-free. Each of our plates were equally delicious.

From there we went to Mc Menamin's Old St. Francis School. The Old St. Francis School has undergone a transformation from 1936 Catholic schoolhouse to fun destination hotel complete with classrooms-turned-lodging rooms, a pub, brewery and bakery, a movie theater, private meeting and event space and a awesome soaking pool! We settle in at Mc Menamin's Pub, O'Kanes, for a pint or two to cap off the evening.

Saturday was a fun filled day of kayaking and paddle boarding at Elk Lake on Mt. Bachelor. What a gorgeous day! The sun was out, the water refreshing, and the company spectacular! Stella followed Jessie's lead and tried her paws at Kayaking. Not quite her thing but she enjoyed it!

Tired from the sun and Friday nights activity, we got our second wind and cracked open a bottle of Washington wine and changed for dinner at Joolz, a Middle Eastern Restaurant with Central Oregon influences, featuring Meza Plates, Flatbread Pizza, Wonderful Mediterranean Salads, Kebabs and Ribs, Elk Burgers, Falafel and yummy Desserts. After dinner we went home and opened a bottle of wine, say on the the upper deck and watched the Oregon night sky....a perfect ending to a wonderful night.

Sunday it was time to pack and say good bye to Dad & Dawn and head back home to Sacramento. It was hard to call an end to our Travels with Stella Pacific Northwest Road Trip, but as they say..."all good things must come to an end." We have great memories and fabulous pictures to keep the trip fresh in our minds.

Wine Tasting in Walla Walla

Arriving in Walla Walla, we headed straight to the Walla Walla Inns at the Vineyard. BEAUTIFUL!

We quickly settled in, poured ourselves a glass of Olsen Hills Chardonnay and enjoyed the sunset. The Walla Walla Inns feature two locations, the vineyard and historic downtown. Our Guest House at the Ahler Vineyard is clean, contemporary, and comfortable. We dined at the Creektown Cafe which is close to Whitman College, where the food was fabulous, service spectacular, and atmosphere charming.

Thursday we spent the day in historic downtown Walla Walla. The tasting rooms are quite unique, offering food, art, and music. We visited Ash Hollow, Skylight Cellars, and Sapolil Cellars where we sat around a piano and had fun conversation with the owner. Small world...her son lives in Elk Grove and her daughter lives part time in Manhattan Beach. We had a fabulous lunch at Brasserie Four, a casual French brasserie serving classic French country style dishes, local and imported wines and beer. Lunch was Oh La La!

Settling back in at the Vineyard, we played cards sipped wine, watched the sunset, and Stella met Redwing (aka Red) the owners retired racing Greyhound who lives on the vineyard.
That night we marveled over how many stars were out in Walla Walla. What a great location! We certainly will try to visit again!

Wines of Yakima Valley

Wine, Wine, Wine, and more wine. What a place! So many great vineyards, so little time. We managed however to find some great wineries to spend our time. We stayed along the Yakima river at the Oxford Suites. Great location along a running/bike trail. Oxford Suites offers a wine happy hour, and full hot breakfast in the morning...and of course, pet friendly.

We started off heading south toward Posser for our wine tasting venture. First of all, I have to say EVERYONE was sooo friendly and welcomed Stella, the wines tasting dogggie, with open arms. We began at Windy Point Vineyards. A very contemporary building with a birds eye view of the Yakima Valley. We particularly like the Exclamation Point and bought a few bottles to begin our Washington collection. From here we hit Silver Lake...which I would not visit again and the friendliness seemed to disappear and we did not enjoy a single wine. We loved Piety Flats Winery, a historic mercantile store/tasting room. Janeen Spurlock was our tasting guide and we had a blast talking and learning about the mercantile store the way it was waaay back when.

We also enjoyed Severino Cellars, a turn of the century farm house with a view of Mt. Adams. It's was at Severino where Stella got to hang with a celebrity. Brody the Highland Terrior is featured in the Winerery Dogs Book.
We headed back to the hotel hungry for dinner. We were told of a great sushi restaurant called New York Teriaki that once was a Denny's. Yes, it was fabulous! Fresh, fresh hamachi and maguro. Yum!

Waking up to overcast skies the next day, we packed for our drive to Walla Walla stopping in Prosser for more tasting. Sooo glad we stopped! We found a beautiful park like area which is home to some 7 or so wineries. We spent some good time at Airfield Winery who's estate winery is locally grown and who's story reflects their aviation roots when their family's 1,000 acre vineyard served as a WWII airbase. This is where Stella met Jax and Kevin & Kelly fell in love with their wines!

Good-Bye Portland...Hello Lopez Island!

All packed and ready for our 4.5 hour drive to Anecortes to catch the 2:30 ferry to Lopez Island, we said good-bye to Portland and were on our way. I think Stella was happy to go...she couldn't figure out the big moving box that took us from the Lobby of the Hotel Monaco up to our room.

The drive was uneventful, the ferry ride fun, arriving at Mom & John's even better! Ahhhh, finally on the island for a relaxing beautiful stay with Mom & John!

Lopez Island offers so much outdoor activity, it's hard to do it all! We walked on the beach, checked out the Island, found GREAT local produce locations, played games, drank wine, and ate great food! Saturday night we had dinner at the Bay Cafe, a local culinary experience not to be missed! The Bay Cafe has been featured in many "foodie" mags such as sunset and Travel & Leisure. A+ Crab Cakes, great soups, and oh so fresh salads....all locally grown. YUM!

Stella loved being free to run and run around Mom & John's place exploring all the island smells and creatures. We visited Lopez Island Vineyards where Stella met her new friend Jessie. Stella & Jessie played and we tasted wine. Our favorite...the 07chardonnay with a strong flavor of toasted wood and the 07 Merlot that boasted flavors of berry, smoke, cherry, chocolate, and anise. We did try a very interesting and quite tasty raspberry wine made by raspberries grown locally at the Broers Family Farm. We thought this one would be great with a nice French vanilla bean ice cream and bittersweet chocolate.

One of my favorite things we did while on Lopez Island was having a Mac & Jack on the back deck in the sunshine at the Islander. Cheers!

Monday morning it was time to say farewell to Mom & John and Lopez Island. We waited for our ferry back to Anecortes and we're off to Yakima Valley for more wine tasting experiences.

Stella Hits Hotel Monaco Portland, Oregon

Whew! After a long drive through California to Portland Oregon...we made it safe and sound at Hotel Monaco.

Upon arriving we were greeted by the friendliest staff we have ever encountered! We were surprised to see a large "dog shaped" chalk board with "Welcome Stella" printed in colorful chalk at the entrance of the Hotel Monaco. We're here! As we checked in I over heard the front desk clerk say they were sold out for the weekend. No doubt, the place is great!

As Kevin took Stella for her post drive potty break, I checked in and was taken to our room. WOW! We were upgraded! Thank you Kimpton Loyalty Program! Beautiful Room! Stella had a basket with a Zanies stuffed toy, dog cookie, dog mags, bowl, and wonderful doggie bed all ready for her arrival. The cookie, quickly eaten..by Stella :-), and the toy was initiated with frivolity and slobber. the doggy basket by-the-way, goes to every room where a dog is checked in. Nice! We also received upon checking in a nice on-sheet on pet friendly dining in the area, dog parks, shopping, etc

After freshening up and a cold beer, we went for a walk to find THE BEST POSSIBLE POTTY SPOT. Stella found the place she liked, got business done, and we were relieved and happy. Happy Dog, means Happy Dog Owners!

Packing for a Road Trip with Your Dog

The reservations are made and we're looking forward to getting on the road for our "Travels With Stella Pacific Northwest Road Trip! But before we close the trunk and hit the road, we need to make sure we have everything we need for Stella.

Food, check! Treats, check! Leash, check! Were packing it all from bowls to beds! Stella even has a new "Walk-e-Woo" brown & pink polka dot lead and collar with a silver & pink tag engraved with Stella's information on it to wear for this trip.

Here are a few very important things to remember when traveling with your dog: Medications, water, portable crate, micro chip tag, proof of rabies vaccination, flea & tick protection (in our case, I'll make sure I apply it to Stella at least two days prior to leaving), poop bags, and toys. We also have a list of Veterinary Hospitals located close to the places we are staying. We learned that lesson on our annual New Years Eve celebration in Bodega Bay, which by the way, we found THE BEST Vet in Occidental! If we lived closer the Occidental Veterinary Hospital is where we would go! So lesson learned, we go prepared.

OK. So now what about me? I am now deciding which cute sweater and jeans to pack for me. After all, if Stella gets to look good, why shouldn't I!

Tomorrw, Wednesday August 26 is National Dog Day, a day for us to celebrate those loyal companions that are so important in our lives. It is every dog enthusiasts hope that this date will help focus public awareness of the important, vital contributions these majestic animals make to our lives everyday.

For many in our society our dogs are our heroes. They give us unconditional loyalty and love, they keep us safe as partners for our law enforcement officers, and they make the world accessible for those who are blind or suffer from a disability.

National Dog Day has two goals: to honor dogs, and to rescue dogs from homelessness and abuse. It's an opportunity for us to recognize and appreciate the value and importance of dogs in our lives.

This day is intended to honor dogs for all that they do for us. In addition to giving love and companionship, dogs help us out in countless ways. They are watchdogs for our safety. They lead the blind. Dogs aid in search and rescue, and they seek out bombs and drugs.

The second goal of National Dog Day is to rescue dogs in need. On occasion, dogs need us to save them from homelesness and abuse. The goal of the National Dog Day foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs a year. Lend a hand to help a dog in need today, or any day.

Origin of National Dog Day:
National Dog Day was created by the National Dog Day Foundation. Their motto is "Saving 10,000 Dogs - One Day at a Time".
President George W. Bush, a dog owner himself, sent a letter to the foundation in support of National Dog Day.

I loved Eckart Tolle's "The Power of Now" and keep it at my bedside for re-reading when I lose my center. I also LOVE the comic strip "MUTTS"! Imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon "Guardians of Being". This wonderful collaboration brings together two greats, joining Eckart Tolle's words with "MUTTS" character illustrations by Patrick McDonnell. Every heartwarming page provokes thought, insight, and most of all, brings a smile to ones face!

As we wrap up our plans and itinerary for our "Travels With Stella Pacific Northwest Road Trip" imagine my excitement to see this article in Sunset Magazine!

You can take your best pal with you on these great getaways around the West

"1. Cannon Beach, ORThe instant I unhook Murphy's leash, his eyes go wide, seemingly asking, "For real?" Leonbergers are natural prancers, but when he hears the magical words "Yep, it’s okay," my dog's jaw drops and his head whips around ― being let loose on a sugar-sand beach 200 yards wide and more than 3 miles long seems to momentarily blow his mind.

Murphy is the perfect pup to test the dog-friendliness of Cannon Beach, Oregon. It's easy for a hotel, shop, or outdoor cafe to accommodate pocket pooches and handbag hounds, but welcoming a breed that's a cross between a grizzly bear and a bouncy, pouncy Tigger ― a dog that stretches 6 feet from nose to tail ― takes genuine commitment to pets and their people.

That's what Murphy has found in Cannon Beach, an enchanting little cedar-shaked town with 14 pet-friendly hotels and 11 eateries where doggies can do dinner at outdoor tables. At the beachfront Surfsand Resort (from $209, plus $15 per night pet fee; 800/547-6100), Murphy is given a beach towel, bowl, and basket of treats.

Dogs are invited to curl up under tables on the deck at the Lumberyard Rotisserie and Grill ($$; 264 Third St.; 503/436-0285). But poor Murphy does not get a doggie bag: The baby back ribs in sweet Pepsi barbecue sauce are that good.

The next day, my wife, Sandi, and I take Murphy to hit the shops, many of which allow him to browse. In particular, he recommends Puppy Love by the Sea (271 N. Hemlock St., Ste. 1; 503/436-9800), a dog-toy and -accessory store, where Murphy shops for a raincoat ― alas, nothing in his size.

The town's star attraction, though, no matter how many legs you have, is one of the world's greatest walking beaches (ci.cannon-beach.or.us or 503/436-8050), which allows dogs to go leash-less as long as they’re under voice control.

For Murphy, this is a tail-wagging turn of events: A tempting gaggle of gulls loiters at the water's edge, eminently sniffable driftwood lies scattered near the bluffs, and a dozen or so other four-leggers are spread out, playing with balls, Frisbees, and each other.

What's a dog to do? His only solution is to start running circles around us, which causes Sandi to break out laughing, which makes Murphy hop, twirl, and paw at the sand until we're all laughing and chasing each other down the beach. –Bob Friel

Introducing Pet Airways - All-Pet Airline Hits the Skies!

All commercial airlines allow a limited number of small pets to fly in the cabin. Others must travel as checked bags or in the cargo hold -- a dark and sometimes dangerous place where temperatures can vary wildly.

Binder and Wiesel used their consulting backgrounds and business savvy to start Pet Airways in 2005. The last four years have been spent designing their fleet of five planes according to new four-legged requirements, dealing with FAA regulations and setting up airport schedules.

The two say they're overwhelmed with the response. Flights on Pet Airways are already booked up for the next two months.

Pet Airways will fly a pet between five major cities -- New York, Washington, Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles. The $250 one-way fare is comparable to pet fees at the largest U.S. airlines.

For owners the big difference is service. Dogs and cats will fly in the main cabin of a Suburban Air Freight plane, retooled and lined with carriers in place of seats. Pets (about 50 on each flight) will be escorted to the plane by attendants that will check on the animals every 15 minutes during flight. The pets are also given pre-boarding walks and bathroom breaks. And at each of the five airports it serves, the company has created a "Pet Lounge" for future fliers to wait and sniff before flights.

The company will operate out of smaller, regional airports in the five launch cities, which will mean an extra trip for most owners dropping off their pets if they are flying too. Stops in cities along the way means the pets will take longer to reach a destination than their owners.

A trip from New York to Los Angeles, for example, will take about 24 hours. On that route, pets will stop in Chicago, have a bathroom break, play time, dinner, and bunk for the night before finishing the trip the next day.

Amanda Hickey of Portland, Ore. is one of the new airline's first customers. Her seven-year-old terrier-pinscher mix Mardi and 2-year-old puggle Penny are taking their first flight soon.

Hickey said the service was a welcome alternative to flying her dogs in cargo when she transplants them from her soon-to-be Denver home to Chicago to stay while she and her fiance travel to Aruba to get married.

"For a little bit more money, I have peace of mind," she said.

It was a stressful experience in a cargo hold that spurred Binder and Wiesel to start their airline. Their Jack Russell terrier, Zoe, flew once in cargo and Binder said they worried about how the dog was doing, but were unable to check on her or get information. The couple soon started looking for a better solution.

"One time in cargo was enough for us," Binder said, walking through an airplane hangar as Zoe trotted in front of her. "We wanted to do something better."

The company, which will begin with one flight in each of its five cities, is looking to add more flights and cities soon. In the next three years, Binder hopes to fly to 25 locations.

Among the big U.S. carriers that offer pet services, AirTran, Spirit, Southwest and JetBlue only allow pets to fly in the cabin. Most U.S. airlines charge between $100 and $125, but Delta and Northwest charge $150 for cabin trips. AirTran is the cheapest among big carriers at $69.

The charge is more to fly in the cargo or check-baggage holds. Delta and Northwest are the most expensive at $275. Alaska Airlines and Midwest charge the least, at $100. Frontier prices its checked pets fees between $100 and $200 and only takes pets as checked baggage.

Anne Banas, executive editor of SmartTravel.com, questions the viability of an airline with such a specific niche.

"I'm not sure how sustainable it is," she said. "But if people are trying to go for a first-class service, it could make sense."

She said the service's popularity could spike in peak summer or winter months when airlines in some areas don't allow pets to travel.

Betsy Saul, co-founder of Petfinder.com, which has ranked the pet-friendliness of airlines for three years, said she's excited about the expected impact Pet Airways will have on pet travel across major airlines.

"The entire industry will stretch because of Pet Airways," she said. "It's a challenge that says 'let's make this (experience) better for pets.'"

10 Easy Pieces to Liven Up Your Dog’s Meals

In part one of this article, we asked the rhetorical question: “If you’re going to feed your dogs ‘people’ food, shouldn’t you feed them something that’s actually good for them?” and answered it with a list of 10 healthy, easily obtainable options straight from the shelves of your local market. As promised, here are 10 more “easy pieces” for your consideration. (Part One can be found here.)

As before, we urge you to keep a few cautions in mind: None of these items by itself constitutes a “complete and balanced” meal. If your dog has health or weight issues, check with your vet before adding any of them to your dog’s food dish. And, as always, start with a small portion and introduce gradually.

1. Carrots
Great dog snack—crunchy, sweet and most dogs really like them. They are loaded with carotenoids, fiber, Vitamin C and Vitamin K (needed for blood clotting) as well as potassium. They have magnesium, manganese, most of the B vitamins and phosphorus, which is required for energy production, among other things. Pup Prep: Start out slowly, as too much fiber may produce flatulence. If your pup sticks her nose up at them, try soaking lightly steamed carrots in chicken broth to increase their appeal.

2. Green Beans
A perfect addition to any doggie dinner. Some dogs love them raw, but most prefer them blanched, which makes for easier digestion. An excellent source of Vitamin K and fiber, these veggies also contain Vitamin C, carotenoids, potassium, B vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, iron and manganese. Pup Prep: Blanch, don’t boil them to death and lose all those nutrients!

3. Parsley
Not your grandmother’s garnish. Parsley freshens dog breath in addition to providing phytochemicals. It also has Vitamin C, Vitamin K, carotenoids, B vitamins, iron and limonene (an oil that kills bad mouth bacteria). Italian flat leaf parsley has a stronger odor and flavor than the curly leaf variety, but a similar nutritional profile. Pup Prep: Fresh is best; chop it and mix a small amount with food (too much parsley can act as a diuretic).

4. Papaya
Readily available in most markets. This tropical fruit contains papain, an enzyme often used as a meat tenderizer. It assists in the breakdown of proteins and thus is considered a “digestive aid.” Ripe papaya is an excellent source of carotenoids and potent antioxidants, and is also high in Vitamin C, most of the B vitamins, potassium, magnesium and fiber. These nutrients benefit eye health, blood vessel integrity and joint function. Pup Prep: Scoop out a ripe papaya and serve as a snack (remove the seeds; they’re edible, but have a peppery flavor that may be too much for your dog).

5. Pumpkin
Low in calories and high in soluble fiber. Pumpkin makes a nice treat for the pooch with an upset tummy and also helps resolve bouts of diarrhea. It is low in sodium and exceptionally high in carotenoids, potassium and Vitamin C, and has some calcium and B vitamins. It can be used as a fat substitute when making dog treats. Pup Prep: Steam and mash fresh pumpkin, or take the easy way out and used canned pumpkin (organic, if possible). If using canned, read the label carefully to be sure you’re getting 100 percent pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling, which has added salts and sugars.

6. Cranberries
An excellent source of Vitamin C, fiber and manganese. Cranberries also contain Vitamin K and phytochemicals thought to inhibit the ability of bad bacteria to stick to and infect the urinary tract. In addition, there may be benefits for blood vessel health and antioxidant protection. Pup Prep: Cranberries are very sour. To offset their tartness, combine them with a sweeter fruit, such as a banana or ripe papaya, for a healthful treat.

7. Sardines
A terrific protein source. Sardines contain appreciable amounts of the amino acid tryptophan as well as Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin B-12 (a hard-to-come-by B vitamin that is essential for cell function). A good source of selenium, calcium and phosphorus as well as Vitamin D, Vitamin B-3 (niacin) and Vitamin A in its preformed state, sardines are a great addition to any doggie diet. Pup Prep: Choose a low-sodium, water-packed variety and mash well, checking for and removing obvious bones, which can lodge in the esophagus or splinter and cause dangerous tears in the gut.

8. Wheat Grass
Also known as pet grass or cat grass. The young grass of the wheat plant (though it doesn’t have the same composition as wheat), it has chlorophyll, fiber, Vitamin E, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and potassium as well as some protein and carotenoids. Wheat grass is also purported to decrease constipation and help with upset stomachs. Pup Prep: Buy or grow a pot of wheat grass and make it available to your dog. Many dogs eat grass, and wheat grass is an improvement over the potentially herbicide-laden, contaminated grass growing along the curb.

9. Turnip Greens
Unfamiliar to many humans and dogs alike. Turnip greens are an excellent source of Vitamin K, Vitamin C, carotenoids, most B vitamins, fiber and manganese. They are also a good source of calcium, copper, potassium, magnesium and phosphorus, and provide a complement of antioxidants. A caveat: Turnip greens are bitter and contain appreciable amounts of oxalates that can bind minerals as well as goitrogens, which may interfere with thyroid function in susceptible individuals. Pup Prep: To minimize these effects and maximize palatability, sauté or blanch. Most recipes call for sautéing, which maintains the greens’ nutritional density and increases the odds that your dog (and you) will eat these healthful veggies.

10. Nutritional Yeast
Grown on mineral-enriched molasses and used as a food supplement. This inactive yeast is high in protein, B vitamins and chromium and several minerals as well. Protein is needed for muscle and cell growth, B vitamins are essential for energy metabolism and enzyme function, and chromium is important for insulin release and action, which allows carbohydrates and other fuels to be taken up by the cells and used or stored. Pup Prep: Don’t overdo it, as too much chromium can be detrimental. Use 1 teaspoon for a small dog, 2 tsp. for a medium dog and 1 tbsp. for a large dog. Mix it with food and introduce it slowly.

Cool Summer Treats

Summer sun makes for hot and treat-hungry dogs. Here are two treat recipes that are sure to please your pooch! Look for organic and/or free-range ingredients and you’ll double the benefit.

Frozen Sunrise
Ingredients
2 cups fruit juice (apple works best)
1 mashed and puréed banana
1 cup plain non-fat yogurt
1 cup puréed strawberries
Directions
Combine all ingredients and whisk thoroughly. Pour mixture into small disposable cups (three-inch bathroom or kitchen paper cups work best). Freeze until solid (at least four hours). To pop out the treat, push up on the bottom of the cup.

Total calories: 540; divide by the number of servings for individual calorie count.

Jerky Turkey
A gentle-on-the-tummy treat—grain-free and low in fat.
Ingredients
1 pound raw ground turkey (or chicken)
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh herbs such as thyme or parsley (optional)
Directions
Preheat oven to 200°. Combine all ingredients in a food processor and purée the mixture. Line a jelly roll pan with aluminum foil or parchment paper (it makes clean-up easier) and pour the mixture into it. Spread evenly.
Bake two hours with the oven door slightly ajar to allow the moisture to escape. Remove from oven and, using a pizza cutter or knife, cut into small, individual-sized portions. Place pieces back in the oven, flipped over, and bake an additional one to two hours, or until the treats are dry and leathery. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Total calories: 794; divide by the number of treats for individual calorie count.

Gobbling Up Turkey
Turkey is becoming more and more available to consumers. It is naturally low in fat without the skin, containing only one gram of fat per ounce of flesh. It is also a good source of B vitamins, potassium and zinc. Cooked with the skin on, the flavor is sealed in without adding additional fat.
